Introduction:
Colourless,transparent oily liquid,b.p.216oC(4mmHg),viscosity 14 c.p.(20oC),refractive index 1.4434(20oC).
It is now chiefly used as a processing solvent,instead of hydroterpineol,for producing hydrogen oxide by anthraquinone process. It is an ideal solvent in this process,for its low volatility and good extraction distribution coefficient.
It is also a cold-resisting and fire-retarding plasticizer applied in ethylenic and cellulosic resins,synthetic rubbers. The cold resisting property is superior to adipate esters.
Application:
Trioctyl phosphate finds applications as a solvent in the synthesis by the anthraquinone process, in order to improve quality, increase efficiency, and make the process more environmentally friendly.
Trioctyl phosphate is used as a plasticizer in polymers such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and synthetic rubber, giving them higher flexibility and better resistance to low temperatures.
Due to its excellent flame retardancy, trioctyl phosphate is also used to produce flame retardant and self-extinguishing products.
Further, trioctyl phosphate works as a diluent for pigments and resins used in coatings and printing inks.
