Tetramethylammonium hydroxide pentahydrate (CAS 10424-65-4) appears as white crystals, commonly containing three, five, or other forms of crystal water. It is highly hygroscopic, readily absorbs moisture, and rapidly reacts with carbon dioxide in the air. The compound decomposes at 130 °C. It is typically supplied as 10% or 25% aqueous (or alcoholic) solutions, or as crystalline hydrate forms.
It serves as a key strong base catalyst in the synthesis of organosilicon products including silicone oils, rubbers, and resins. It is also widely used in polarographic analysis, photoresist developing processes, and as a base catalyst in various organic synthesis reactions.
